His Story

High School

Baxter Russell was a standout high school basketball player at David Crockett High School in Austin, Texas where he earned the title, The Crockett Rocket. In 1984, he was a 5A 1st Team – All-District, All Centex, and All-Region. As a Senior, Russell was tied for first place as a Leading Rebounder in the state of Texas. He averaged sixteen rebounds a game. He was also nominated for the McDonald’s All American (Top 25 Players in the United States).

College 1984-1985

Russell chose Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas; one of top junior colleges in the great state of Texas. During his Freshman year, he won the honors of Newcomer of The Year and 2nd Team All-Conference. He and his teammates went on to become conference champions. After a 16-0 record; Blinn went on to win the conference and lost to Laredo Community College in the NJCAA Semi-Finals in Alvin, Texas. As a sophomore, Russell transferred to McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas. He was voted Team Captain and Starter. At one time, he led the team in assists and steals, and MCC was ranked #2 in the nation. He earned 1st Team All-Conference and All-Region. His team was upset in the first round of the NJCAA Regional Playoffs against Hillsboro Junior College in Hillsboro, Texas.

1986

Russell received many full-ride scholarships offers to play at Division I schools. His decision led him to the University of Texas in his hometown where he was born and raised. Russell practiced with the team and took summer classes. After having his first child; he decided to transfer. He went back to McLennan Community College to obtain his Associate Degree in Liberal Arts. After completion of his Associate’s degree, he was offered a full-ride scholarship to the University of Missouri-Kansas City at a Junior College All-Star Game in Waco, Texas.

1987-1989

At UMKC, Russell lettered two years and was Team Captain. He set two school records in steals and assists. Those records stood for 18 years before they were broken. Russell was a threat all over the court earning him UMKC Pepto Bismol player of the year 1988. He was voted Independent Player of The Week twice and in one game had 12 assists; which was a team record. He also had a record of 8 steals in one game(which also was a school record). In his two-year career at UMKC, he started in 53 out of 54 games averaging double figures, and was a crowd favorite! The one game he didn’t play; was due to injuries.

1990

After playing in different states; winning accolades and championships on a collegiate and semi-professional level, Russell received a contract offer to play overseas in Australia. Prior to accepting the offer, he had a traumatic car accident in which his infant son passed away in his arms. This life-changing event took his love of basketball away temporarily. Later that same year, he received another great opportunity to play in Mexico; but the accident continued to take an emotional toll on him physically and emotionally. He returned to his hometown of Austin. During the next few decades, he had his youngest daughter and decided to pursue a musical career to provide for his family.

2014-Present

After a successful indie music career; he realized his passion and love for basketball overshadowed his love of music. In the summer of 2014, he decided to move to Atlanta, Georgia to start a new chapter of his life and pursue basketball coaching and training. In learning the tricks of the trade, from different coaches, players, and trainers from all over the world; Russell was 110% ready to start his company, BSR Sports Academy, LLC. He wanted to be on the business side of coaching teams and training individuals to find their passion for the sport he has always loved as a child…BASKETBALL!
